The 2010 installment of the long running Street fighter series entitled Super Street Fighter 4 is Capcom’s 2nd installment of the veteran fighting game for the current gen console systems. Overall the game delivers a brilliantly diverse roster of 36 fighters which has the most notable legacy characters like the legendary Ryu and Ken as well as Chun-li, Bison and all from the 1991 world wide arcade and console hit Street fighter 2. The new characters are well designed and actually fit in quite well in the series although it looks like the new characters have had more design time than the classical fighters which gives the motivation to try them out for a bout or 2.
The game comes with a semi 3D look and feel, although presented with a 2 dimensional outlook. The game delivers deliciously animated 3 dimensional move sequences and throws which certainly makes for some good utilization of the current Play Station 3 and Xbox 360 graphical capabilities. As a lifelong Street fighter fan I have to say it is fabulous to find that all legacy character moves still work in addition to which there are a series of special moves for each character that are presented with such vibrant, light flashing, high speed and brutal delivery that it outta put a shrug smile on any Street Fighter veteran player as well as any player new to the.
Classical fans will be happy to hear the familiar character stage soundtracks as auxiliary music when the arcade mode is initiated triggering fond memories of Street Fighter 2 battles of old. A great new feature is that backgrounds now have a 3D behavior which rotates the angles and views gradually as the fight progresses which compliments the mostly visually stunning backgrounds. The classical car bashing bonus stage has been included which will have you fist and foot bashing against what looks like a previous generation C-Class Benz, I wonder what the folks over at Capcom really think about the German Car manufacturer in light of this development. Three is no Benz Emblem though but after playing Street Fighter 4 Super I can’t help but feel like taking a tight fisted jab at the next Benz I see, but that’s just me.
The lack of a playable story mode gives it a narrower play variety when compared to other fighting games of this generation like Soul Calibur 4 and Tekken 6 which offer an alternative form of gameplay that may extend play-time. However the exclusion a story mode keeps it true to its roots which can’t be a bad thing considering the multitude of cultic fans of the highly venerated Street Fighter 2 games. This makes online multiplayer bouts highly entertaining. Besides that I can’t see any fault in this installment of Street Fighter so if you are a Street Fighter fan or a newbie looking to kick virtual opponents around your television screen then street Fighter 4 super is for you.
Seth; the current street fighter boss is semi fierce and deliverers reasonable challenge for the final battle but given a barrage of ken’s fire balls, uppercut punch and spinning round house kicks plus one or two special move executions, he should succumb to the force of all that button bashing and analogue stick toggling. Over all Street Fighter 4 Super is a welcome addition to the current generation fighting game titles and is well worth the purchase.
